NeuroStar uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to stimulate areas of the human brain that are underactive in individuals dealing with depression. TMS therapy is not the same as ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).

By comparison, in a separate study not involving NeuroStar, for patients who have not found relief from 3 or more antidepressants, the chance of remission from subsequent medications is less than 7%.
NeuroStar is not a drug, “shock” therapy, or surgery. And it doesn’t have any of the side effects associated with traditional antidepressants.
There is no sedation, anesthesia, or recovery time and for most people the NeuroStar treatment is relaxing. The most common side effect is mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the treatment site that usually subsides within the first week of treatment.
